There are a few things floating around my head that need conversion to the written word.
1) Is anyone else a little disappointed that Kobe Bryant doesn't have a signature celebration? The Alvin Gentry slap combined with a randomly childish airplane did not suffice. He does not have any particular beef with Gentry like the Reggie/Spike choke and ball-grab. He just clinched the series. You'd think he'd come up with something a little, well, more mature and relevant.
2) An interesting argument I had with a friend: Which injury is worse? Bill Gramatica's torn ACL celebrating a field goal or Kendry Morales' broken ankle while celebrating a walk-off? We've decided that it all depends on how Morales bounces back. Bill Gramatica's excitement ended his career. TBD with Morales. Although I think when all the cards are on the table, Bill shall prevail.
3) I really do feel bad for the Toronto Blue Jays. Take them out of the AL East, and they probably won't fade by early July. Meanwhile the AL West wallows in mediocrity. One more thing regarding that awful division. How is it that the AL and NL West have 4 teams while the NL Central has 6? Just saying.
In Kendry's defense, it was a game winner. Gramatica's kick was for a 3-0 lead in a game they eventually lost to the Giants.
ReplyDeleteI'll give the award to Gus Frerotte for his head-butt to the Giants Stadium wall in a game the Skins ended up tying, whicg gave the Giants the NFC East, while the Skins missed the playoffs in 1997.
God I hated that game, it was a prime time game, so I stayed up until past 1:00 am to watch a tie with work the next day.
I always wondered when someone was going to get hurt in a celebration after a game. I didn't think it would necessarily be baseball that had this happen.
ReplyDeleteI am not disappointed Kobe doesn't have a signature celebration, I am not sure he is creative enough for that. Calling himself "Black Mamba" was pretty good for him. Perhaps he should slither across the floor after hitting a big shot.
KBilly,
ReplyDeleteI forgot about Gus. He definitely takes the cake. It's remarkable that he's lasted in the league for so long. Once Donovan implodes and people call for his head again, maybe they should look into reviving the Gus era.
Bengoodfella,
Baseball injuries are remarkable to me. Outside of pitching arm injuries, there's very little opportunity to even get hurt. But I guess the limited running leads to limited athletic ability, which in turn leads a higher risk of injury.
I just hate the Kobe lower jaw. But I'm also a Kobe hater in general, so that might explain it. I respect his game, but every time he succeeds its like a knife in my heart.
Bengoodfella,
ReplyDeleteI also have been unable to read the majority of your post today. For whatever reason, after the bolded portion, the rest of the article is blank. I don't know if other people are experiencing this, but I thought I'd let you know.
Unless I didn't get the joke, The NL West has 5 teams (the Rockies, Padres, Dodgers, Giants and Diamondbacks). The reason the AL West had 4 teams and the NL Central has 6 is so that with 30 teams, each league has an even number (and therefore all teams can play an intraleague game simultaneously). If every division were equal, one team in each league would have to be off every day. Hope I solved that mystery.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous,
ReplyDeleteIt was supposed to be a shot at the terrible diamondbacks, who have managed to fall behind by the second worst margin in the majors. Obviously my joke failed.
Dylan,
ReplyDeleteIf you noticed the night after Kendry fractured his leg after his walk-off slam, Howie Kendrick and mates were quite subdued after Howie's walk off game winning homer.
It is too bad about Toronto being in the AL East. They could win a couple of divisions (both Wests) had thy been there.
